The genesis of god

there really is
a kind of tingle on the scalp
as if, you know…
but most times
almost nothing –
nothing in the realm
of the real
the palpable
except that everything
that isn’t in sharp focus
fades – retreats in paler shades
oh, imperceptibly at first, yes
but in the end there is nothing
nothing but this thing in the brain
that they say can be reduced
to synapse and neuron
and chemical baths –
captivating as the cherub
with wings and darts
whose sting is welcomed
by human hearts…
but this is mind, you see –
I’m speaking –
trying to –
of a question
the one
that can be read
in a child’s eyes
from the spangled night
