has it been as many years as that –
seven dogs and – here and there – a cat ?
then again, I’m old enough to know
that no one ever thinks it’s time to go;
just one more year, six months – one month, they say
[there’s some would even bargain for a day!]
time to put things right, get it down pat…
no really, has it been as long as that?
This bird’s all thumbs –
keeps knocking crumbs down off the sill;
or does he plan to gather up the spill,
retiring silent –
unseen as carp down by the mill?
are spooning whipped cream
on the hill; a few tall trees –
like steeples now – look taller still;
and could I live a thousand lives
a hundred more I’d will.
